Does Teeth Whitening Harm the Teeth?

Does Teeth Whitening Harm the Teeth?

Is Teeth Whitening Harmful?

The teeth whitening procedure performed at clinics (bleaching) involves the application of chemical agents containing hydrogen peroxide to the teeth, which are then activated using laser technology to remove stains from the enamel and dentin of the teeth. Like any procedure, there are potential side effects associated with laser teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening treatments are ideal for stains on the enamel. These stains can be caused by cigarette smoke, beverages that discolor teeth like tea and coffee, changes in color due to inadequate brushing, fluorosis stains, and others.

Teeth whitening is not recommended for individuals under 20 or over 50 years of age.

Possible Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

  • Sensitivity: This is the most common complication of teeth whitening procedures. Sensitivity is often reversible. It is more likely to occur in patients with gum recession, faulty restorations, enamel abrasion, etc.
  • Cervical Resorption: This serious complication occurs after internal teeth whitening procedures. Cervical resorptions are usually asymptomatic and can only be detected through radiographs.
  • Short, sharp pain resembling an electric shock in some teeth,
  • Temporary white spots on the gums where the whitening agent has touched,
  • Redness and swelling of the gums are also potential side effects of the whitening procedure.

Due to these and similar reasons, teeth whitening should be performed under appropriate conditions and by experienced professionals.

Who Should Not Undergo Teeth Whitening?

  • Patients whose expectations of the whitening treatment are too high, and the desired level of whiteness cannot be achieved,
  • Patients who lack oral hygiene and cannot follow the dentist's recommendations for preventing staining,
  • If there are oral sores during the whitening session,
  • Patients with erosion, abrasion, or similar problems,
  • Patients with excessive sensitivity,
  • Smokers,
  • Patients with many or deep fillings,
  • Patients with excessive enamel wear should not undergo teeth whitening treatments.
